Summary:
Automation is an integral component of nearly all nerve conduction studies (NCS) performed using modern instrumentation. In this review, the definition, history and examples of electrodiagnostic automation are provided with a particular focus on NCS. Recent advances are described, along with limitations and appropriate clinical use of automation technology. Finally, future directions and the potential impact on physicians and patients are discussed.
